Meet Ian Ward and John Deverall: Masters of Stone Carving at Curious Creatives

John & Ian at the Autumn Malvern Show having been Commended

For centuries, stone carving has been a craft that blends creativity, tradition, and skill. At the August 2025 Curious Creatives Craft Retreat, we’re thrilled to welcome not one but two exceptional tutors, Ian Ward and John Deverall, who will guide you into the world of stone carving. Together, they bring decades of expertise, a passion for their craft, and a welcoming teaching style that ensures every student feels inspired and supported.

Ian Ward - Bas relief on Bath Stone

Ian Ward: Ian's stone carving journey began with formal training at Winchester and an esteemed four-year apprenticeship at Chichester Cathedral. Over the years, he has worked on some of the UK’s most iconic landmarks, including St Paul’s Cathedral, Windsor Castle, and Stirling Castle, as well as private estates like Woburn Abbey and Althorp. Known for his exceptional skill and historical accuracy, Ian’s work is a testament to his dedication to this ancient craft.

In addition to his carving, Ian is passionate about teaching. His approachable style makes stone carving accessible to beginners while offering depth and expertise for those with prior experience.

John Deverall - Lettering on slate

John Deverall: John complements Ian’s technical skill with his own wealth of knowledge and engaging personality. When I (Sue) had the opportunity to visit Ian and John at their week-long workshop at Shave Farm in Somerset, I was struck by John’s enthusiasm, charm, and ability to bring out the best in every student.

Together, they make an unbeatable team, creating a fun and encouraging learning environment. What to Expect in the Stone Carving Course

Ian and John’s three-day stone carving course is designed to give students a relaxed yet immersive experience. You’ll work with soft Bath stone, a material that is both manageable and versatile, making it perfect for beginners and those with some experience.

Throughout the retreat, you’ll learn techniques to create your own relief panel (bas-relief)—a beautiful, low-profile design carved into stone. For the adventurous, there’s also the option to try a simple freestanding 3D sculpture or experiment with abstract designs.

Stone carving is a wonderfully meditative craft, allowing you to slow down, focus, and connect with your creativity. Ian and John will guide you every step of the way, ensuring you leave with a stunning creation and newfound skills. Ian and John are excited to make their debut at the Curious Creatives Craft Retreat. Their passion for stone carving is matched by their love of teaching, and they look forward to sharing their expertise and helping students discover the joy of this ancient craft.
