Tutor Focus - Hannah Hamer - 3D Needle Felt Artist

Hannah is our creative 3D Needle Felting Artist and her projects for the Craft Retreat are at one with nature. I met Hannah back last year whilst having a wander around Stratford-Upon-Avon with my (then) 11yr old niece. We were happily browsing beautiful craft stalls in a wonderful market when my eyes found the CraftyGal stand. I was in awe of the amazing works that were displayed in front of me. The detail in each of the animals, domestic and wild, was astounding. Having disturbed Hannah from probably only her opportunity to have been able to grab a bite to eat that day, I started chatting with her about her work.

You know when you get an instant connection with someone? Well, I felt that with Hannah. She is a warm, friendly and approachable lady with a huge love for nature. In that moment I knew that I had to have Hannah on the Curious Creatives Craft Retreat Team.

In all honesty, Hannah must've thought that I was completely bonkers. Our interaction lasted only for a few minutes and it wouldn't have surprised me if she had dismissed me there and then. But, a few months later when I messaged her about the Craft Retreat she responded with super enthusiasm and I knew that my initial instincts had been correct! Of course, I needed to get to know Hannah a lot more so I emailed her and asked a tonne of questions. It's only fair that I share with you what she's told me...

I'm 41 years young and I have a 6 year old daughter called Ruby. Ruby was premature and spent quite some time in hospital after she was born. As a result, I realised that I wanted to spend as much time with her as possible so decided not to go back to work and began working from home selling my crafty creations.

I got married last year and although it was something I never thought I would do, it was the best day ever!! We got married outside, had street food rather than a sit down meal and used lots of small independent businesses to help us create the perfect day. I love nothing more than spending time outside with my friends and family.

I live in Warwickshire/West Midlands and have done for all of my life, apart from a few months where we travelled around the UK in a campervan. I absolutely loved it and hope to do it again one day. My husband is from Devon so we get to go there every couple of months to see family. I love going to the beach and could spend hours rock pooling. It doesn't matter what time of year it is, I will always take off my shoes and paddle in the sea. I'm lucky enough to live in the countryside, surrounded by fields but can jump on a train and be in the centre of Birmingham in 20 minutes.

One of my big passions is music and I love going to gigs and festivals.

Glastonbury festival is my happy place and I try to get tickets every year, although I haven't been successful recently I will keep trying! We love going to smaller family festivals too and luckily Ruby loves them as much as I do. The Killers are my most favourite band and I have seen them more times than I can count.

Another passion of mine is nature and wildlife. I am butterfly obsessed and during the summer months can be found running through fields chasing butterflies, you never know if it's going to be one you've never seen before! I'm also a bit of a bird watcher. My bird knowledge isn't great but that doesn't stop me carrying my binoculars everywhere. I get my love of nature and wildlife from my parents and grandparents who have shared their knowledge with me and my three brothers for as long as I can remember.

I love theme parks and we were lucky enough to go to Disneyland Paris for our honeymoon. Luckily Ruby and my husband are thrillseekers too and the bigger and scarier the ride the better! The scariest ride I have been on was the Tower of Terror, I was absolutely petrified but loved every second of it. I have a phobia of people dressed in costumes, for example Mickey Mouse. I think its because you can't see the persons face, luckily they were all behind barriers at Disneyland because of Covid so I didn't have to get too close!

I love doing craft fairs around Warwickshire and the West Midlands and love meeting new people.

I have made lots of friends in the crafting community and even got one of them to make my wedding ring! Working from home can be quite lonely sometimes so it's nice to have people around you who know how it feels and who are so supportive.
